About Us

Mission Statement

At Youth With a Positive Direction (YWAPD), we are committed to empowering youth and children through comprehensive, culturally relevant initiatives that instill life skills and a love for the arts.

Our Journey

Since our inception in 1991, YWAPD has embarked on a remarkable journey of success. It all began with an after-school program at the Main Street Church of the Living God, serving 15 young individuals per day. Today, our reach has grown significantly, with over 175 children and youth benefiting from our multifaceted programs.

Our Impact

Over the years, YWAPD has become synonymous with well-designed and culturally relevant initiatives, earning a reputation for their effectiveness and popularity. This success is attributed to the unwavering support of parents, dedicated volunteers, and invaluable community partners.

Our Headquarters

Since August 2004, YWAPD has been headquartered at the Main Street Church of the Living God, strategically positioned at 2000 North Main Street in Decatur, Illinois. Our facility spans 30 rooms, covering 12,500 square feet. It houses various amenities, including a production studio, dance studio, video room, computer laboratory, kitchen/cafeteria, classrooms, private counseling and tutoring spaces, a game room, and administrative offices.

Programs and Initiatives:

Our Programs

Our programs are designed to provide a comprehensive range of services, from homework assistance and tutoring to positive adult mentoring, life skills education, cultural arts appreciation, computer training, sports, and recreational activities.

Cultural Arts

Of particular significance is our commitment to cultural arts, believing that an appreciation for the arts is a fundamental aspect of a fulfilling life. Our cultural activities encompass vocal music, drum line, piano, dance, costume design, music and video production, drama, computer graphics and design, and poetry.

Community Initiatives

Beyond our direct programs, YWAPD has been at the forefront of community initiatives. We’ve proudly served as the lead agency for Decatur’s Safety Net Works coalition and The Decatur Cease Fire Project. Further, YWAPD has successfully run a Teen REACH Program for over six years, and we recently introduced a STEM program for all students, with sessions held twice a week for a total of four weeks per youth.

Adaptability During COVID-19

In 2020, when faced with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, YWAPD demonstrated its adaptability by launching the Teen REACH Distance Learning Support (DLS) program. This initiative supported 100 youth by providing additional assistance during school hours and beyond. Students had the option to attend our central location during the day, ensuring they were logged into their virtual learning meetings. This not only supported students but also eased the burden on parents. Our in-person program services were available Monday through Thursday, between 7:30 am and 5:00 pm, reaffirming our commitment to the welfare of our community.
